New Common

J Smalls strikes again

One of my best friends has been making quite the name for himself as one of San Francisco's elite bartenders. Jamal now has appearances on a weekly TV show to add to his resume, with three short episodes filmed already and six more in the works. Each episode is about five minutes long and includes Jamal teaching the audience how to make a specialty cocktail. Here are links to the first three episodes:

Pass me that eel soda

Last month a new soft drink was released in Japan containing freshwater eel extract, as well as other vitamins found in the fish. The drink is called Unagi Nobori, which basically translates to "Surging Eel". It is said to have a similar taste to broiled eels. I love eating eel at Japanese restaurants but this does not sound very delicious at all. It's gotta be better than python blood though, right John?

No Reservations: Japan

For the latest episode of Anthony Bourdain's cooking/travel show No Reservations, the celebrity chef visited what he describes as one of his favorite culinary destinations in the world: Japan. Included are meals of hand made cold soba noodles, semi-raw chicken yakitori, monkfish prepared by Iron Chef Masaharu Morimoto, and a visit to three star Michelin rated Sukibayashi Jiro, for arguably the best sushi available on the planet. This episode epitomizes so many of the things that I love about Japanese food and culture. Watch it below in five parts, or if you prefer you can download the torrent here.
